Alcoholism Progression — Dean’s World
One of the most insidious things about the disease of alcoholism–and it is a disease, despite the best efforts of thundering moralists to deny the science and the plain medical and biochemical facts–is that it plays on your character defects (which all people have) and, worse, it progresses slowly.
The involvement of McCain’s family in federal regulatory issues could create a conflict of interest for a future McCain administration, according to advocacy groups and political analysts. McCain has recused himself for many years on alcohol issues in the Senate. As president, however, McCain would face far more difficulty distancing himself from an issue with such broad scope.

I‘ve not lived in my home town for 10 years and now for six of those I’ve been sober and drug free, so my life has changed considerably. But when I walk back into that area my good head does not go with me.

Are you the happiest person you know? Not necessarily the luckiest, richest, or most successful, just the happiest?
If not, why not?
How Happy Are You?
* Do you have more possessions or items in your life than you can handle comfortably?
* Do you find it difficult to dispose of many things, even those you haven’t used in years? Continue reading
Hi, Fearless Readers…
Hope you like the new look. I just got tired of the other one…it was so bland. I’ll be tweaking this one a bit and if we don’t like it, we can always revert.
During the Christmas holiday in 2004 we had a lot to be grateful for. All three of our young adult sons were in recovery. We had survived Hilary’s mother’s death and my sister Mary’s death. Edward and Nicholas had come harrowingly close to death and Jeff had found sobriety as well.

Experts say constant use of mobile devices hasn’t been diagnosed as an addiction–yet. But some contend that it’s fast on its way to being classified as a disease similar to drug addiction, alcoholism or gambling.
David Greenfield, a psychologist who is an expert on Internet-related behaviors, says he predicted a decade ago that people would become ultra-dependent on mobile devices, even more than they are on PCs and laptops. Since phones don’t weigh much and fit easily into a pocket or a purse, “the threshold is even easier to cross, and there’s no end to it,” Greenfield says. “You’re pretty much hooked in wherever you are, if you want to be.”
Greenfield says constant and continual use of untethered devices produces chemical responses in the body similar to gambling. When compulsive gamblers win a hand, they are motivated to keep playing till they win again–no matter how much they lose in between.
It’s the same with mobile texting and e-mailing, he says. “Every once in a while you’ll get a good [text message or e-mail] between Viagra ads and Uganda money schemes,” Greenfield says. “That’s a hit, and it’s a powerful reinforcer.” ….

“Media consultant” is barely adequate to describe Mr. Schwartz’s portfolio. In a career of more than half a century, he was variously an art director; advertising executive; urban folklorist who captured the cacophony of New York streets on phonograph records; radio host; Broadway sound designer; college professor, media theorist and author who wrote books about the persuasive power of sound and image; and maker of commercials for products, candidates and causes. What was more, Mr. Schwartz, who had suffered from agoraphobia since the age of 13, accomplished most of these things entirely within his Manhattan home.
Of the thousands of television and radio advertisements on which Mr. Schwartz worked, none is as well known, or as controversial, as one that was broadcast exactly once: the so-called “daisy ad,” made for Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidential campaign in 1964. …

I’m always amused by the way atheists seem to feel compelled to straighten out all the believers. Seldom does one run across a person self-labeled an “Atheist” that they don’t seem eventually to drag out some axe to grind with regard to religion. It seems to me that people who truly don’t believe would just sort of ignore the issue.
I suggest that a 180° turn leaves me in the same old rut, and that if I want to free myself from some perceived bondage I need to strike out for new ground. Otherwise, I’m just letting it — whatever it may be — continue to direct my life, regardless of what I choose to call myself.
It’s the same way with recovery. If I’m continually thinking about booze or drugs, then I need to question my progress. There comes a time when recovery is no longer about drinking and drugging, but rather about learning to live an already drug-free life 180° From Wrong Is Still In The Rut180° From Wrong Is Still In The Rutmore skillfully.
That’s why I like being an agnostic; no axe. I just say “I don’t know, and neither do you,” and let it go at that. Same with recovery. I just say, “No thanks, you’re welcome to mine.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom plans to officiate at the private ceremony in his City Hall office before 50 invited guests. He picked Martin, 87, and Lyon, 84, for the front of the line in recognition of their long relationship and their status as pioneers of the gay rights movement.
Along with six other women, they founded a San Francisco social club for lesbians in 1955 called the Daughters of Bilitis. Under their leadership, it evolved into the nation’s first lesbian advocacy organization. They have the FBI files to prove it. …
