A global surge in ADHD diagnosis has more to do with marketing than medicine

Sorry, guys…I’ve been busy working and on a couple of other projects.  I’ll be back in person tomorrow, with luck.

In the meantime:

Many websites promoting ADHD drugs offer checklists with questions like these:

  • Do you fidget a lot?
  • Is it hard for you to concentrate?
  • Are you disorganized at work and home?
  • Do you start projects and then abandon them?

“These checklists turn all kinds of different behaviors into medical problems,” Conrad says. “The checklists don’t distinguish what is part of the human condition and what is a disease.”

Huge Study Finds Brain Networks Connected to Teen Drug Abuse

A recent study has indicated that teen drinking is strongly related to problems in the neural network that controls impulsive behavior.  Professionals have long known that the two go together, but had no indication of which came first.

This study settles that, and other questions regarding ADD and drinking.

Faced with a choice about smoking or drinking, the 14-year-old with a less functional impulse-regulating network will be more likely to say, “yeah, gimme, gimme, gimme!” says Garavan, “and this other kid is saying, ‘no, I’m not going to do that.'”

Fetal Alcohol Kids Have Serious Ongoing Problems

Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Have More Severe Behavioral Problems Than Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Study Finds

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have a high risk of psychiatric problems, particularly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, or both. Often children with FASD are initially diagnosed with ADHD. A new study is the first to examine a range of cognitive factors and social behavior in children with FASD and ADHD, finding that those with FASD have significantly weaker social cognition and facial emotion-processing abilities.
